Retrieving

Teaching a dog to retrieve, may be one of the best things you could ever do for him. Retrieving is a brilliant way to exercise a dog without losing that all important contact between the two of you. In addition, it is the very best way to exercise a dog whilst retaining complete control over it. Finally, it provides the best preparation for redirecting your dog when seeing a prey.

Teaching your dog to retrieve is not simply throwing a ball or a toy and hoping he will bring it back. The retrieving process is actually quite complex. Many dogs have a natural instinct for at least one part of the retrieving process – for example – chasing a ball or toy. Some dogs will also pick the toy up. Getting the dog to bring the ball back, or to let go of it, and persuading the dog not to devour the ball or run off with it, are all common problems. And finally , maintaining the dog’s interest in retrieving for the long time is also a common source of difficulty. That’s why it is important to understand the whole retrieving process inside out before you even begin to throw a ball or dummy for your dog.

In this course you go step by step and build up from a proper, solid base of training, before you throw the dummy the first time. Here you gradually build up the interest and also patience of the dog, in order to have a structures approach to retrieving, rather than a chaotic chase with 50% chance for the dog to come back with the dummy. Slowly the difficulty level will increase and depending on the type of dog and it’s preference, we go either deeper into searching tasks or alternative into mobility tasks, where the dog has to go through a parcous while carrying the dummy.
